Ahhh yes. I had modem crash. On Christmas Eve. No compliance at all. Of course mine is a VOIP modem. No going to Dickies (repackaged, stuffed, somewhat used or possibly new) for me.
I went anyway: no one in the street was on ADSL aside from me. A brand new $70 cheapo later proved the line was fine. Internet fine; no phone.
I then plugged in the "stuffed" modem. Dog to a vet with a limp routine. Threatened with replacement it continues to function perfectly.
I have always really enjoyed the way ISPs hang out the threat ... “if we report it to Telstra and it’s not a problem with the phone line .......... YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY”.
Sometimes, it really is the phone line.
When my router needed to be replaced, a little while back, the nice floor staff at Dick Smith were quite knowledgeable and helpful. However, at the checkout counter, the sales guy was a dick, and clearly assumed all customers are blithering idiots.
“I assume I can return this if it turns out to be the wrong thing?”
“It’s a router.”
“Yes, I know it’s a router. If it’s not the right type of router, I need to be able to return it.”
“No, we don’t permit returns.”
Me – turning box over, carefully reading the big sticker added to the box “this item has been returned, all parts checked”, or such, even including a date for the return.
Maybe he meant there was a limit on the number of times they were prepared to re-sell used items?

I'll be stuffed.
