Wednesday Wisdom

The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government; they have only a talent for getting and holding office.

H. L. Mencken

    Absolutely correct.

In three lines Mencken has distilled why democracy is so important. In better truer democracies a kind of Darwinian principle prospers. Only individuals, like the governments they form, best at what they do survive. This is how it should be. Anything else in government is abhorrent.

Yep, there once was an ordinary artist (sort off) who played the democratic game and united a nation (sort off). He held on to power for twelve years while his loyal plebs pretended not to see what he was doing to the "less human".

    I agree Geoff - abhorrent.

I know this is particularly crude and nasty Justin but try thinking of democracy as a bright happy perhaps naive young girl away from home for the first time and Hitler as a sleazy date rapist with a pocket full of rohypnol.

    Spot on Geoff.

PS. Bet I'd never fall for Hitler - however, if he had a pocket full of scotch then all bets are off.
