Hope I'm not being impertinent... but Spencer was, after all, a prick.

The worst kind of 19th Century prick, Herbie coined the phrase "survival of the fittest", which he thought should be the organising principle of any 'progressive' society. Gave Hitler lots of food for thought.

Gaze if you dare upon the very face of inbred, upperclass 'fitness' and "lifelong bachelorhood".

  4. Well, "survival of th fittest", a concept that lives to this day, was a bastard of a notion. It contaminates and skews a lot of thinking, much in the way that many of Freud's concepts (none proven, none possible to prove) have been so thoroughly absorbed into modern thinking and culture that it seems impossible to remove them.

No small irony that evolutionary fitness (Darwin) was essentially survival of the fecund. The lifelong bachelor Herbie can't have had much confidence in his own fitness.

He was not an attractive man, by any measure.
