Poetic Interlude

The Bridge Builder

An old man, going a lone highway,
Came at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned when safe on the other side
And built a bridge to span the tide.
“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near,
“You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide-
Why build you the bridge at the eventide?”
The builder lifted his old gray head:
“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,
“There followeth after me today
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.”

    Just beautiful Caz!
    Could also be titled:
    Selflessness...

    Now, from the sublime to the superstars.
    Did you see Nicole Kidman is pregnant? Baby due July.
    Good for her, and Keith.
    I have always liked her honest down to earth approach.
    Hope all goes well for her.

  2. Hard day / week month at work Kath - this poem was an uplifting slice of beauty in my day. It gave me a moment of serenity and meaning to what I do, you know?

    To the extent that the gossip mill these days seems to function, almost to the exclusion of all else(except, maybe, "celebrity" DUIs)on "baby bumps", most of which do not and will never exit, I'm relieved that "our Nick" will finally have a bio-child.

    At her age, this is her last gasp, so she will probably only have the one (though who knows, she could try for another in quick succession), so, FINALLY, we can ALL move on already!!!!

  3. Oh - and yes, I do hope this is a successful pregnancy for her, truly I do. I couldn't bare the gossip fall-out if anything real goes wrong. Goodness knows they will make-up pregnancy disaster - along with "I hate my fat body" - stories for the next 25 weeks.

    Ugh!

    It's all so asinine, distasteful and undignified. The gossip stories, I mean, not pregnant women!
