Frog Watch

"A cane toad the size of a small dog has been nabbed in the middle of a "breeding frenzy" in a Darwin suburb."

"The toad will be kept alive and used for education and display purposes."

Yes Caz, these cane toads are a real problem. Soon we will be innundated with them in WA.

Typical governments, won't do any bloody thing until the horse has bolted!!

Even "bounty hunting" the wretched creatures would have at least retarded their massive onslaught, while a possible longer lasting solution could have been developed!

  2. I was going to go for a play on "the nips are gettin' bigger", Kath, but I thought that might be too colloquial for my vast international audience. Wouldn't be lost on you though. :-D

I can't believe they impose "humane" killing requirements on the huge volunteer killing communities Kath, not in this instance.

I reckon people can think of a lot of things to do with their evenings other than go out to kill a few dozen cane toads night after night for months on end, and barely making a dent on the problem, yet thousands of people do precisely that, without complaint or reward.

It’s like using a kiddie sand bucket to stem a ferociously rising wall of sea.

Maybe, just maybe, some clever buggerlugs at CSIRO will finally come up with a “safe” way to murder or neuter this swarm of vermin. Doesn’t appear to be any progress on that front though,

Special Toad joke for you Caz!

There once was a toad that was excluded from all green toad activities because he was a handsome shade of yellow.(like yelwor)
So he went to visit a beautiful fairy in the town over who had the power to grant wishes.

"" Fairy I would like to be green." he said. " So I can play with the other toads."
Granted said the fairy , who turned him green!
Unfortunately his toady little penis was still yellow.
" What about my penis , he asked the fairy.?"
Oh for that you will go have to go see the wizard" And so the toad hopped off to find the wizard.

Soon a pink elephant visited the fairy, and he wished to be turned gray.
She granted him the wish , but , as with the toad, his peins was still pink.
So she told him to visit the wizard.
" How do I find the wizard he asked?"

Just follow the yellow dick toad!

  4. This guy looks familiar ;-)

The introduction of cane toads is an example of a solution that is worse than the initial problem.

What's that old saying...The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

A little off-topic but some perspective please.

Have you people in Victoria finally gone completely insane?

Read this. Then go and have a look at the video of the incident.

A young teenage girl throws a tantrum in public and lashes out at her dad. Her dad grabs her towel because Little Miss Wobbly is about to storm off a few minutes before a swimming heat that they have come to the other side of the world for after spending years preparing. They tussle over the towel and the precious one storms off a few metres after giving her dad a left hay maker to the chops. She sits down and after a while her dad, clearly as upset AS SHE IS, attempts to console her by putting an arm around her shoulders. She flounces off again. All this is captured by a typically sneeky TV camera crew.

And what happens? The cops take out a separation order on the spoilt brat's behalf. The deply distressed dad is then charged under one of those new Orwellian laws that they have been drafted by social workers. Something to do with "family violence".

I ask again. Have Victorians gone completely and utterly insane?

And you are worried about a few honest Queensland cane toads? Let me tell you something. I far more worried about your Victorian PC do-gooder standards and laws crawling north.

  6. Not sure that I would lump this into the "politically correct" basket Geoff.

If they were strangers the police would have charged someone.

Should they have responded differently because it's "domestic"?

Media didn't have to be sneaky about filming this, they were out in a public place for goodness sake.

  7. At least she won her heat in the pool today Geoff. Good for her.

"Should they have responded differently because it's "domestic"?"

Of course they should have Caz. I saw no offence that was recognisable to the law as it was taught to me. (Other than the kid's slug to her dad's right jaw perhaps)

At one stage the father put his hand on the girl's arm. So?

Isn't this a private moment of people under stress? There's a camera around. How does that change things? Listen to the breathless commentary of the Channel 9 talking head.

  9. In fairness Geoff, the police didn't lay charges based on the Channel 9 footage. They only made the decision to lay charges after interviewing the father and the daughter at length.

We're obviously not privy to what was said by either party, but police do, and they based their decision on matters raised during that process.

Following the interviews, it was equally open to the police to not charge anyone.

In other words, we don't know the reasons why the police have proceded, but they would have had cause.

  10. Anonymous10:35 PM

Point taken, Caz. I have also now seen a much clearer version of the footage than the internet video I saw earlier and while it is still not clear what exactly happened, it does seem that the "contact", or whatever, was much more vigorous than I had previously thought.

  11. It certainly wasn't the norm, in any public place, let alone an international sporting event.

The FINA ban on the father is a non-police matter, and entirely up to them.

Oddly the police still haven't specified what charges they are pressing against the father. Presume an assault charge. He'll be fined / put on a bond, and fly home.

Who knows what happens to the father / daughter relationship after this.

  12. So, it was a difference of opinion over a boyfriend Geoff.

Charges dropped and dad & daughter reunited. Both a little worse for wear, and perhaps both a little wiser, in this instance.
