Don’t salute yet

THIS is the Westgate Bridge

This is the Bolte Bridge - oops

We have to wait another 18 months before we get WHOPPING BIG flags hanging on top of the Westgate Bridge. You'll have to hold your patriotism in your beating little hearts until then folks. In the meantime, a rousing chorus or two of Waltzing Matilda would not go amiss, or, one of my personal favorites, the Telstra theme song: I am Australian (you know, just in case anyone was askin').

“We are one, but we are many

And from all the lands on earth we come

We share a dream and sing with one voice

I am, you are, we are Australian.”

Aussie, Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. If you ever need to phone the Telstra call centre, and if you're really lucky, you'll get to listen to the song for 45 minutes straight while you're on hold.

    The Seekers Kath????!!!!

Oh Kath, you're too young to even know who they are.

Do you remember there was a re-formed Seekers? They can't have lasted long, but I think after a couple of the originals left, for a very brief time there was a "New Seekers". Well, they played at a theatre owned by people my dad worked for and the girl singer/s (?) must have left some of their stuff behind. I ended up with a pair of hotpants, which were more like a little flaired skirt thing, but shorts - much like a circus performer might wear. Blue and gold and red. I was sooooo cool Kath.

Ah yes Caz I do remember the "New Seekers" now that you mention them.

Didn't they have a hit song " Look What They Done To My Song Ma."?

Weren't there two girls in the group , both with long hair. One brunette the other blonde.

It's funny the things that you suddenly remember eh Caz?

(I think the song was on a top twenty hits album ,that my sister had)

Well they tied it up in a
plastic bag and turned it upside down Ma..
look what they done to my song!

    Hey Caz!

    Still got the hotpants?

  4. Not a bad looking bridge - if you like things a bit on the small side. Now if you're chasing impressive engineering feats, you simply can't beat our Narrows bridge, eh, Kath? Er...Kath?

Behold it in all its glory!

    We also have the Causeway.

    Suffer in your jocks, Melbourne!!

  5. The Causeway is a mere spit length of a bridge, but if it makes you WA folk proud as punch, I'm sure not going to be the one to deflate your puffed out chests.

The other one is simple and elegant, and seems to be at least a few dozen spit lengths - more your Melbourne sized bridge that one. But, but, but - Narrows Bridge?!

    Narrows bridge?!

Why a description; couldn't anyone come up with a name?

Sooooo, where are your whopping BIG flags then, 'ey, 'ey, 'ey?

  6. Ah, yes, but the Causeway has TWO, that's right, TWO parts! The shot I posted earlier is only one span. Here's the other bit of it. Not feeling so smug now, are you Cazspar??

Ah, you're asking about big flags, eh. Well, there's a big arse flag near the Narrows (btw, that's just our ironic sense of humour calling it that seeing it's such an epic bridge, geddit?). Let's see if we can get a snap of this flag...ah, yes, there it is on the left. Pity the wind is blowing the wrong way - you can't see how huge the flag is! It's like, the size of a bath towel. No, a bath sheet!

All jokes aside, it's a pretty big flag.

Look, I have to get one up on Melbourne because Jeff Kennet was over here today and he slagged off WA, describing our limited trading hours and liquor licencing laws as "North Korean". Bastard! Melbourne must pay!

He's dead right, of course, but we West Aussies can't let that slur go unremarked. The fact that it hits home makes a huffy response even more necessary.

  7. You let Jeff into the state?

    Ha!

    Let me repeat that: Ha!

Serves you right you silly dumbnuts!

  8. Using my extra strength magnifying glass, that flag looks ... like a flag.

  9. Re. Kennett: okay, you have a point. Caveat emptor and all that.

Re. that flag: it's actually pretty big. No, really - it is!
